If your Sisterlocks keep breaking off or your traditional locs, or dreads, breaks too much it can be very frustrating. After several years of growth and your locks are at a nice length and you are loving it, something crazy starts happening. Somewhere along the shaft the loc starts to thin, and before you know it part of the loc is almost separated from its lock’d up bond. Next thing you know is you are ripping apart the almost detached loc. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was just one but there are so many locs breaking that now it has become a concern. Sometimes it can be challenging to get to the root of the problem but there are a few namely red flags that you can pay attention to and then try to fix the problem. Prevent your locs - traditional or sisterlocks from breaking off.

If your Sisterlocks keep breaking off, or if you have traditional locs, or dreads, there are things you can do to help to keep them strong and healthy.

Red Flag #1 -  Color We love color and for some of us we keep going lighter and lighter. Then the question arises. Why does my sisterlocks keep breaking off? The lighter you color your locs, it doesn’t matter if it is sisterlocks, microlocs, Dreads, or traditional locks, you are weakening the bonds of the locks and thinning or breakage can occur. The higher the level of peroxide the more damaging it is on the locs. Keep in mind color is a chemical and you are altering the construction of the hair when it is applied. Therefore, invest in a reconstructor or a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. A reconstructor should be a part of your ‘how to care for your locs’ hair care regimen especially if you have color put in and the color is more than 3 levels lighter than your own natural hair color. Reconstructors are different than moisture treatments and deep conditioners. The main purpose of the reconstructor is to reconstruct and restore the damage layers of the locs; To keep the natural structure of the hair in place and to help to avoid splitting of the hair. Typically, the reconstructor is loaded with protein and will penetrate to the deeper layers of the locks and strengthen it. Generally, a once a month treatment is pretty much what is required for a reconstructor hair treatment for about 15 to 30 minutes with a conditioning cap on. A dryer can also be used to help to open up the cuticles for better penetration of the reconstructor. Afterwards, you can rinse with a conditioner. It is always good also to follow label instructions. Excessive usage can make the locks hard and stiff. A moisture treatment or a deep conditioner can make the locks soft and pliable and those can be used more frequently. Following this protocol will help the locs or sisterlocks from breaking off. Red Flag #2 -  Lack of Care to the Locs Is a key reason why your sisterlocks, locs, or dreads may thinning  or breaking off. Let’s face it. Some people abandon their locks. Don’t ever do that. You can always tell the ones who almost never do anything to their hair – not wash, not moisturize, not nothing. Even if you do not oil or put some type of product on your scalp, invest in a good shampoo that has moisturizing capabilities. Locs that are too dry especially when thin are more likely to break faster than normal. And if you have sisterlocks you shouldn't be asking ' why my sisterlocks keep breaking off ' if you knowingly neglect taking care of them. Red Flag #3 – Bad Diet Your Sisterlocks keep breaking off, or dreads not looking up to par, lack of quality protein and vitamin deficiency can cause dry, brittle, easily breakable locks. A bad diet can cause thinness also. If your sisterlocks, dreadlocks, or simply your traditional locs tend to break easily, it may be a sign for you to examine your diet. It never hurts to eat healthier. A good diet will keep the hair follicles healthy and will help to prevent dreads, locs, sisterlocks from breaking off prematurely.
