Transitioning Your Hair to Its Natural State

With the natural hair movement gaining more and more momentum every single day, many women are transitioning to natural hair styles. Transitioning is a great option, especially if you don't want to do the "big chop", which sacrifices your hair length and makes you go natural all at once.

Transitioning allows you to pace yourself and go back to a natural state at a rate that you are more comfortable with. Here's how you can reach your natural hair goals.

The first thing that you must remember is that you have to quit chemical relaxers cold turkey! This needs to be a constant commitment  because come on, you can't relax your hair and go natural at the same time!

As time passes, you'll be able to see the difference in texture between your relaxed and natural hair. You need to also give up all forms of chemical treatments that alter the structure of your hair.

This is because they can add extra fragility to your hair and can prolong the transitioning process for you, which is something that you don't need.

Treatments to avoid are keratin treatments, permanent hair dyes and especially texturizers. Texturizers are even more harsh on your hair than chemical relaxers.

Keep to your usual routine of shampooing and conditioning your hair and dry lightly with a towel. Strengthen your hair with frequent deep conditioning treatments (about once a week) and protein treatments (about once a month).

The deep conditioning is a vital component in your transition journey because where your natural hair meets your relaxed hair, it is extremely fragile. Make sure to moisturize your hair on a daily basis with a water based moisturizer.

Avoid the use of heat styling tools such as blow dryers, flat irons and curling wands. These tools can hinder your transitioning process more than it can help it.

Last but not least, opt for low manipulation styles because they save your hair from unnecessary stress. Try things like box braids, twist outs or even a roller set, they are all easy to do and can look super-cute and stylish.

Make sure that you invest in a satin headscarf, a satin pillowcase or both. This will save your hair from unwanted breakage while you sleep.
